Fan Completes Banjo-Kazooie Decompilation, Opening Possibilities for Unofficial PC Ports

A dedicated fan has successfully decompiled the entirety of the classic Nintendo 64 game Banjo-Kazooie. This decompilation process involves reverse-engineering the game’s code and converting it into C, which can then be compiled into a playable version for PC. With this breakthrough, fans can now use assets from their own legal copies of the game to play Banjo-Kazooie on their computers without relying on an emulator.

This isn't the first time an N64 game has undergone such a transformation. In 2021, two fans successfully reverse-engineered Ocarina of Time. However, it's important to note that reverse engineering doesn’t involve the illegal use of game assets. Players still need to provide their own legally obtained copies of the game in order to compile and run an unofficial PC port.

As pointed out by Twitter user @BringBackBanjoK, the Banjo-Kazooie decompilation is now complete. This could pave the way for an unofficial PC port, similar to the Ocarina of Time project, which resulted in the fan-made port "Ship of Harkinian." This port allows players to enjoy the game on PC with added features like mod support, provided they own the original game. Some fans have even gone so far as to recreate the game from scratch in Unreal Engine 5.

Banjo-Kazooie has maintained a loyal fanbase, and the character has appeared in modern titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019. Xbox has also re-released all the Banjo games on its consoles, keeping the series alive for newer generations. Despite this, no new Banjo-Kazooie game has been announced, though fans have long been clamoring for one.

In July, during an episode of the XB2+1 Podcast, Xbox insider Jez Corden confirmed that there are currently no plans for a new Banjo game. Although Corden mentioned that such a project could happen in the future, there is no active development at this time. Fans continue to push for Xbox to BANNED in family-friendly titles like Banjo, especially given the success of characters like Mario and Astro Bot on other platforms.
